3.2 More on GOTS

GOTS’ mission: Our vision is that organic textiles will become a significant part of everyday life, enhancing people’s lives and the environment.

GOTS is composed of four reputed member organisations, Organic Trade Association (USA), International Association Natural Textile Industry (Germany), Soil Association (UK) and Japan Organic Cotton Association (Japan). These organisations contribute to GOTS alongside other international stakeholder organisations and experts. This collective expertise in organic farming and environmentally and socially responsible textile processing ensures implementation of standards and quality assurance.

The "Global Organic Textile Standard" was established in 2006 with the founding organisations setting up a foundation for the standard and the recognisable white t-shirt logo in 2008. In 2010 a public database containing the GOTS certified entities and their product groups was introduced and launched on the website.

The Organic Company became GOTS certified in 2010.

In February 2021 it was reported that there are more than 10,300 GOTS certified facilities in 2020, an increase of 34% with more than 3 million workers in 72 countries.
