6.1 WHY + WHAT ON PACKAGING
Most products need to be wrapped in packaging, this can be for many different reasons, such as promotion, advertising and of course protection. Delicate products such as fruit, vegetables and textiles need to be wrapped in boxes or bags for protection during transport, handling and storage.
Textiles need to be protected against two main things; moisture and dirt, and so packaging is a very important part of the product supply chain. Just as fruit with bruises will end up as waste, textiles with stains and marks will also be thrown away.
It is clear that functional packaging is important for protection and can save products from damage and unnecessary waste. Development in the packaging industry is enabling companies to have more choice about what types of packaging to select, considering the best functionality for the least environmental impact.
