OUR RESOURCE PRINCIPLES

LESS AND BETTER

Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity’s demand for natural resources in a given year exceeds what the Earth can regenerate in that year. For the last 50 years, we have used far more resources than our Earth can regenerate.

OVERCONSUMPTION
This is what overconsumption looks like, the way we use the Earth’s resources has to be managed. In order to do so, all of us, including governments, businesses and consumers need to have a set of resource principles, guidelines and specific actions to help us achieve better.

Well, that’s how we see it. And we have ideas and solutions for moving forward.

5 important behavioural actions that matter

REUSE
Reuse instead of creating more waste, this means using less disposable items or cutting them out completely. This requires some planning, like bringing shopping bags, coffee mugs to go and drinking bottles with you when you go out.

RECYCLE
Pass on items that you no longer have a use for, this can be clothes, kitchenware, children's toys or furniture and consider buying second hand as often as you can. Recycling on a large scale is mainly a governmental and business matter and whilst more progress is needed, you can help in your local area. Recycling facilities can vary greatly from country to country and also from one material to another so it is worth checking what facilities are available to you.

REFUSE
Refuse to buy (most) new things: Do you really need it? And when possible you can consider borrowing instead of purchasing new. Lastly, refuse disposables, especially straws, napkins and bags when they are offered; remember to bring your own reusables for a picnic, coffee to go and when shopping.

REPAIR
The art of repairing was a virtue and a skill almost lost a few generations ago, but we love to see this becoming a new trend again. Japanese stitching techniques, like Sashiko can be a really creative way to repair your loved items, there are a lot of tutorials on YouTube.

REDUCE
The mountain of crap. We all have to buy less and better. And think about it. Instead of buying 10 cheap t-shirts buy one or two really nice ones that will last. And if you have a hole in something, then try to repair it, a beautiful repair will give you a unique item with a story of love and care.

Our two-pronged mission and resource principles

At The Organic Company we have a two-pronged mission:
1. We want all farming to be organic – no more destructive production methods.
2. We want people to buy less and better – because we have to, right?

And these are our resource principles:
1. Recycle, when possible.
2. If new, then organic, biodegradable, FSC or the equivalent.
3. If organic, then certified.
4. Always buy less and better.

We believe in responsible business, which can be a necessary game changer for our planet, it is clear to see just how important it is.
