4.1 EARTH DAY

EARTH OVERSHOOT DAY

Earth Overshoot Day (EOD) marks the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what Earth can regenerate in that year.

EOD is calculated by dividing the world bio capacity (the amount of natural resources generated by Earth that year), by the world ecological footprint (humanity’s consumption of Earth’s natural resources for that year), and multiplying by 365, the number of days in a year.

In 2021, it falls on July 29. We are simply using too many resources for our planet to keep up with our consumption.

Did you know that about one trillion single-use plastic bags are used annually across the globe. That’s nearly 2 million every minute.

Globally we use 500 billion plastic cups every year.

And around the world, people litter more than 4.5 trillion cigarette butts every year.

We’re the generation of over consumption. We have got used to buying and then throwing out, clothes, single use packaging, furniture, electronics, it's time to change our habits.
